Following Atlas FC’s Clausura 2022 Final win on Sunday night and earning of the Campeón de Campeones crown, given the club’s back to back season wins, Atlas FC will represent LIGA MX and face New York City FC on Wednesday, September 14 at Yankee Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET) in New York City, to decide which league takes home this year’s Campeones Cup title.
Now in its fourth edition, the 2022 Campeones Cup will feature the reigning MLS Cup champions, NYCFC, against Atlas FC, LIGA MX’s Campeón de Campeones. The line up was determined last night in the city of Pachuca in the return leg of the 2022 Clausura Final with Atlas FC defeating Pachuca 3-2 on aggregate at Estadio Hidalgo. With this they claimed back-back LIGA MX titles and move on as the LIGA MX representative in the Campeones Cup. Atlas FC defeated Club Leon in December 2021 to also win the 2021 Apertura season.
In the history of the Campeones Cup, the MLS leads two wins to one against LIGA MX. Tigres UANL conquered Toronto FC in the inaugural 2018 edition, Atlanta United defeated Club América 3-2 in the exciting 2019 match, and the Columbus Crew resoundingly defeated Cruz Azul 2-0 in the 2021 edition.
