NEW YORK AND MEXICO CITY (July 19, 2021) – Major League Soccer (MLS) and LIGA MX have confirmed the details of the 2021 edition of Campeones Cup, the annual clash between the reigning MLS champion and Liga MX champion. Columbus Crew will host Cruz Azul Club on Wednesday, September 29 at its newly opened stadium, Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio, (8:00 p.m. ET on Univision and ESPN2 in the United States, TSN and TVA Sports in Canada, and Canal 5 in Mexico) to determine which league will take home the title.

Now being played for the third time, Campeones Cup 2021 will feature the reigning MLS Cup champion, Columbus Crew against Cruz Azul, winner of Liga MX’s Campeón de Campeones, which was played yesterday in Los Angeles.

Last night, Cruz Azul defeated 2-1 Club León at Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles and moved on as the Liga MX representative in Campeones Cup. Thus, Club León will participate in Leagues Cup as previously announced.

The two previous editions of Campeones Cup have been split, with MLS and LIGA MX claiming one title each, after Tigres UANL beat Toronto FC in the inaugural 2018 edition, and Atlanta United defeated Club América 3-2 in what was a thrilling contest in 2019, played in front of over 40,000 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Campeones Cup, along with Leagues Cup, are part of a partnership between the two most important soccer leagues in North America, MLS and LIGA MX, which was launched in 2018.

This alliance goes beyond the two’s rivalry on the pitch — it focuses on strengthening the sport in the regions where these matches are being played, encourages mutual collaboration and the sharing of best practices for the benefit of the local communities.

With that in mind, MLS and Liga MX have today confirmed they will host a community service project in Columbus in partnership with the Ohio Hispanic Coalition to give back to the local community as part of Campeones Cup. Details of the event will be announced later on.

Campeones Cup will be the finishing touch to a five-week span of clashes between MLS and Liga MX, which will be played out across August and September, including Leagues Cup matches, which will start on August 10, and the MLS All-Star game presented by Target, set to be played on August 25, between the MLS All-Stars and the best of Liga MX.

Campeones Cup is proudly sponsored by BODYARMOR, Procter & Gamble and Diageo.
