With the club’s win Sunday night to become Campeón de Campeones of LIGA MX, Tigres will represent the Mexican league and face Major League Soccer’s reigning champion LAFC on Wednesday, September 27 at BMO Stadium (8 p.m. local / 11 p.m. ET) in Los Angeles, to decide which league will take the fifth Campeones Cup title.
Tigres won the inaugural Campeones Cup in 2018, becomes the first club to participate a second time in Campeones Cup, and is the only Mexican club to have secured the title in the history of Campeones Cup.
In the fifth edition of the annual matchup between MLS and LIGA MX champions, the 2023 Campeones Cup will feature Tigres, which defeated Pachuca 2-1 Sunday night in Los Angeles during Campeón de Campeones, which pits the most recent Apertura and Clausura champions of the Mexican league. Representing MLS is reigning MLS Cup champion LAFC, which earned the spot in Campeones Cup with a memorable 2022 MLS Cup win, defeating Philadelphia Union in kicks from the penalty mark.
In the history of Campeones Cup, MLS leads three wins to one against LIGA MX. Tigres UANL conquered Toronto FC in the inaugural 2018 edition, Atlanta United defeated Club América 3-2 in the exciting 2019 match, and the Columbus Crew resoundingly defeated Cruz Azul 2-0 in the 2021 edition. NYCFC then defeated Atlas 2-0 last year to give MLS its third consecutive win.
Campeones Cup, together with Leagues Cup, are part of a larger partnership between the two most important soccer leagues in North America, MLS and LIGA MX, launched in 2018. The partnership is rooted not only in the on-field rivalry, designed to strengthen the sport in the region, but by a true spirit of collaboration off it, with a focus on sharing best practices and on being a force for positive change in the local communities of both leagues. Leagues Cup will debut this summer from July 21 to August 19. As part of their commitment to support positive change in local communities, the participating clubs and leagues will join forces to conduct various community service initiatives leading up to Campeones Cup. More details in the coming months.
