Club Santos Laguna will get started in their Leagues Cup 2023 campaign against Houston Dynamo FC on July 25 at Shell Energy Stadium. The Liga MX team was on the sidelines on matchday one while Houston Dynamo took on Orlando City SC.
Santos started the 2023 Apertura with a surprising home loss to Club Querétaro. However, the Mexican side bounced back with a road win over Club Puebla and a draw to begin building momentum as they head into this Leagues Cup.
Houston Dynamo fought to a draw with Orlando City SC, earning a point before losing in PKs. The Dynamo benefited from a controversial penalty decision in stoppage time of the first half and Amine Bassi converted from the spot to give Houston a lead. It was shortlived, though, as Orlando City equalized one minute into the second half before taking the extra point in PKs.
Group South 2: Who’s in it?
Club Santos Laguna has a chance to be in the driver’s seat of the group if they can earn three points against Houston Dynamo FC. Houston’s toothless attack shouldn’t be much of a threat to the LIGA MX side. If Santos Laguna can win, then they will guarantee themselves a spot in the knockout stages and knock Houston out of the tournament. If that happens, the third match of the group will just be for seeding purposes in the knockout stage.
