The round of 16 of this year’s Leagues Cup will see a new edition of the Clásico Regio, one of the fiercest derbies in LIGA MX between CF Monterrey and Club Tigres, playing out this Tuesday, August 8.
Over the course of the nearly 50-year rivalry, the two teams have played each other 131 times, and the head-to-head record shows how balanced they are: 47 wins for Tigres, 43 for Rayados, 40 draws, and one game that had to be called off.
When it comes to the international stage, the rivals have played each other six times when taking into account official games and friendlies, giving a record of two wins each and two draws.

The first match-up between the two teams took place in the Mexican second division. CF Monterrey would run out 2-0 winners, a result which virtually guaranteed their spot in the top flight.

This game is known as the “Relegation Clásico”, given the final score meant that Tigres would be relegated at the hands of their biggest rivals.

May 1, 2019, saw the second leg of the final for the continental title, which Rayados would go on to win. The eventual champions had won the first leg 1-0 at their arch rivals’ Estadio Universitario, and the return match at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer ended in a 1-1 draw.

Club Tigres 1-0 CF Monterrey | June 6, 1979
This was the first match-up between the local rivals in a LIGA MX play-off. Back then, the final phase was played out in a group-stage elimination format - although the two teams ended up going through, it was Club Tigres who won on the day.

The highest-scoring match between the two teams was played out at Estadio Universitario. The Auriazules convincingly beat their cross-town opponents 6-2 as part of the Apertura 2004 campaign.
