Tigres UANL was founded in 1960 as a university team. The club joined Liga MX in 1970 and has since won the league title eight times, most recently in 2022. They have also won the Copa MX three times and the CONCACAF Champions League three times.
The Felines are one of the most popular clubs in Mexico with a large and passionate fan base. They’re currently in 10th place in Liga MX, having drawn both of their two matches. They have an experienced squad that knows what it takes to win and will hope they can start showing that in Leagues Cup 2023.
Tigres will form part of the group, West 1, along with Portland Timbers and San Jose Earthquakes. Their first match will be on July 26 against Portland at Providence Park at 10:00 p.m. ET.
Andre Pierre-Gignac: The French star
He began his career with Olympique de Marseille, where he made his professional debut in 2004. He then moved to Toulouse FC in 2007, where he won the Coupe de France in 2012. Gignac then, surprisingly, joined Tigres UANL in 2015.
Since joining the Liga MX side, he’s gone on to make over 330 appearances. On top of that, he’s scored over 180 goals, making him the all-time leading scorer in Tigres history. The veteran striker can still bang in the goals, so the Mexicans will hope he can continue doing so in Leagues Cup.
Raymundo Fulgencio: From the academy to the first team
He began his career with Tigres UANL's youth academy, left for Veracruz and then came back to Tigres and made his professional debut for the club in 2019. A Tigres player through and through, he has been a regular starter with the team since 2020.
Fulgencio’s talent hasn’t been in question, what has been is his work rate. Does he really want it? At 23 years old, he’s shown signs of brilliance but has been a very irregular player and will have to pick it up if he will truly be the next star for the felines.
