Leagues Cup 2023 is coming to an end soon, but the excitement is far from over. Today is the semifinals! For one of the last four teams, the next two matches will be club-defining and result in a brand new trophy and a spot in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. So, who's playing? Let’s check out the matchups.
PHILADELPHIA UNION VS. INTER MIAMI CF
- DATE: August 15
- STADIUM: Subaru Park
- SCHEDULE: 7:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. CDMX
- HOW TO WATCH: Apple TV - MLS Season Pass
The Philadelphia Union has come into the semis playing some of the best soccer of any club not led by Lionel Messi. They’ve won five straight coming into tonight’s match, three in regulation and two in a penalty shootout.
Inter Miami CF has become THE tournament favorite, no doubt because of the performances from Lionel Messi, who hasn’t disappointed in his arrival to the U.S. But Messi hasn’t done it alone and the play of his teammates have also been elite during the tournament. Like the Union, Inter Miami comes into the matchup undefeated. Of the five matches the club has won, four of those wins have come in regulation at home while one has been in a penalty shootout on the road.
CF MONTERREY VS. NASHVILLE SC
- DATE: August 15
- STADIUM: GEODIS Park
- SCHEDULE: 9:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. CDMX
- HOW TO WATCH: Apple TV - MLS Season Pass
CF Monterrey is the lone LIGA MX team standing and now they aren’t just representing themselves or their supporters: they’re representing all of Mexican soccer. And the rest of LIGA MX have already shown their support for their fellow LIGA MX club. And Rayados have played some great soccer throughout the tournament despite every match being a road match; a very difficult team to beat.
Trying to stop the Rayados train, and all of the Mexican support behind it, will be Nashville SC. The Music City club is the only team in the semifinals that has lost a match in this tournament: they lost to Toluca FC 4-3 on July 27th. But since then, the club has had an emotional roller coaster of a ride into the semis, including “losing” to Club América for a moment before VAR saved their tournament title hopes. If any team is ready for a wild semifinal, it’s Nashville SC.
