Another exciting day has come to an end in Leagues Cup 2023 and we’re seeing how the round of 32 is shaping up. There is only one more day left in the group stage for the full bracket to be complete. But for now, let’s look at who punched their ticket to the knockout stage on Sunday night.
Atlas FC finished atop Group East 3 after winning both of their games in the group stage. This Sunday, they beat Toronto FC 1-0 following up a 1-0 win over New York City FC in their tournament opener. NYFC finished second in the group and also advanced thanks to their 5-0 win over Toronto FC.
In an exciting close to Group East 4 play, New York Red Bulls beat Atlético San Luis, 2-1. The win combined with a draw and penalty shootout win over New England Revolution clinched the top spot of the group. Following a 5-1 loss to New England Revolution, Atlético San Luis needed to win in order to advance. But following the loss, the Revolution move on.
In the round of 32, Atlas FC will square up with the New England Revolution while New York Red Bulls will kickoff against its Hudson River derby rival New York City FC.
Group East 1 was also settled. Club Tijuana, who lost 3-1 to Philadelphia Union in their debut, lost 1-0 to Club Querétaro and was eliminated. Club Querétaro finishes in second place behind Philadelphia Union, who won both of its matches.
The Union will face off with D.C United in the round of 32 while Club Querétaro will get Pumas.
CF Monterrey fell behind two goals early against Seattle Sounders, but stormed back behind a hat trick from Germán Berterame to win 4-2 and take the top spot in West Group 2. The club had an easier time in its first match, thrashing Real Salt Lake, 3-0. The loss eliminated the Sounders, who lost their opening match to Real Salt Lake, 3-0.
In West Group 3, Club León clinched the top spot of the group without even playing. That happened because Vancouver Whitecaps FC beat LA Galaxy, 2-1. The Galaxy failed to get a point in the tournament after losing its opening to Club León.
In West Group 1, Club Tigres defeated San Jose Earthquakes, 1-0, to finish in the top spot and eliminate San Jose. The team beat Portland Timbers, 2-1 in its tournament debut. The Timbers finished second with points from it’s 2-0 win over San Jose.
So the West Region in the round of 32 is set: Club León takes on Real Salt Lake; Club Tigres faces off with Vancouver Whitecaps FC; and CF Monterrey kicks off against Portland Timbers.
