Lionel Messi shines again with double to go top of Leagues Cup scoring charts

Messi celebrates in his three matches at Leagues Cup

Since setting foot in North America this summer, Lionel Messi has more goals scored than matches completed. In Wednesday night’s 3-1 win over Orlando City SC, the forward played the full 90 minutes for the first time and reached the top of the scoring charts at Leagues Cup 2023 with five strikes. Here’s a breakdown of the goals the Argentine World Cup hero has scored in his scintillating time at Inter Miami CF so far:

The Florida outfit went through to the Round of 16, with the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner taking center stage once again. Since joining the team, he has turned their fortunes around, with Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s men now among the favorites to go all the way in the competition.

Since his debut in the competition, Messi has found the net in all of his games. On the opening night of Leagues Cup 2023, against Cruz Azul, he came on in the second half and scored a dramatic last-minute free-kick to claim all three points.

The second, a 4-0 win over Atlanta United FC, saw him start the match, and it only took the former Barcelona man eight minutes to open the scoring. He doubled the team’s lead a quarter-hour later, and was taken off after 78 minutes. Watch the two goals here:

This Wednesday evening saw Messi play the full match for the first time in an Inter Miami CF shirt, in the 3-1 win over Orlando City SC in the Round of 32. He scored another brace, in a decisive performance that ensured his team would go through to the Round of 16 of Leagues Cup 2023.

As a result, Leo has drawn level with CF Monterrey marksman Germán Berterame at the top of the leaderboard, with both sitting on five goals so far.
