Estadio Azteca, Club América, and San Diego FC — all the ingredients are set for a spectacular night of football. Las Águilas make their Leagues Cup 2026 debut against one of Major League Soccer's most ambitious projects. Coapa enters as the favorite thanks to home-field advantage and history, but Mikey Varas' side won't be intimidated by the World Cup venue and will look to take points off André Jardine's squad.

WHAT TO EXPECT?
Club América, the current Liga MX leader, will host San Diego FC in the first-ever Leagues Cup match to be played at the historic Estadio Banorte, which will also be the first official meeting between the two clubs.
América will look to take full advantage of its home-field advantage, including Mexico City's altitude, as it seeks to open the tournament with all three points. Las Águilas enter the match on the heels of a commanding victory over Santos Laguna, where established stars such as Brian Rodríguez and Henry Martín, along with emerging talents Isaías Violante and academy product Dagoberto Cárdenas, showcased why Guillermo Almada's new project has the quality and depth to compete for every trophy this season.
For San Diego FC, the challenge will be to improve on its first Leagues Cup appearance, when it was eliminated in Phase One after recording one win and two defeats. The club is also looking to reverse the fortunes of what has been a difficult season. Just one year ago, San Diego sat atop the MLS Western Conference; today, it finds itself second from the bottom of the standings.
América head coach Guillermo Almada made the club's ambitions for the tournament perfectly clear:

América will look to capitalize on every advantage at its disposal to begin its Leagues Cup campaign with a victory and take an important step toward securing one of the four quarterfinal spots available to Liga MX clubs.
Playing at Estadio Banorte for the club's first-ever Leagues Cup home match, Club América has earned 66% of the market, while San Diego FC sits at 16% as it looks to pull off one of the tournament's biggest early upsets.
