WHAT TO EXPECT?
A matchup that brings together two opposing strengths: the best defense among Liga MX teams in Phase One against the tournament’s highest-scoring attack. Whichever side is better able to impose its strength could earn a place in the Final. León saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end with a draw against Atlante, while Toluca enters the Semifinals riding a three-game winning streak.
Toluca also enters with a spot in the Concacaf Champions Cup already secured, while León needs a top-three finish in this tournament to earn its place. Antonio Mohamed’s side will look to extend its three-game winning streak across all competitions, while Javier Gandolfi’s León will aim to maintain its perfect record in this year’s Leagues Cup.
Javier Gandolfi and Antonio Mohamed share plenty of history. Gandolfi was the captain and starting center back at Xolos de Tijuana when Mohamed arrived, and together they won the 2012 Liga MX title, the first of Mohamed’s coaching career.
Despite its defensive strength, led by Jesús Gallardo, Toluca also has multiple ways to create danger, with Alexis Vega directing the attack alongside Helinho and Federico Viñas. The Diablos Rojos finished their Quarterfinal against Austin FC with 26 shots but only two goals, making efficiency in front of goal another potential determining factor.
Toluca will face a dynamic, attack-minded León side that will look to control possession but is also comfortable attacking quickly in transition and exploiting gaps in its opponent’s defense. Jordi Cortizo and Fernando Beltrán will look to create opportunities for Daniel Arcila and Díber Cambindo as León searches for a way through Mohamed’s defensive unit.
Toluca will look to add another trophy to its recent success, while León enters the Semifinals one victory away from securing its place in the Concacaf Champions Cup and two wins away from lifting the Leagues Cup trophy.
