The opening match of this year’s Leagues Cup between Austin FC and Pumas UNAM had everything fans could hope for: goals, a red card, intensity, and an all-around high-drama rivalry on Friday at Q2 Stadium in Austin.
The 2024 tournament’s first showdown between LIGA MX and Major League Soccer was an instant classic, fought with the intensity of a final rather than an opening match.
Austin entered the game without their regular goalkeeper Brad Stuver, giving Stefan Cleveland his first start of the year. In his 2024 debut, Cleveland was one of the main reasons why Austin will now face CF Monterrey with three points under its belt already.
Pumas also rotated away from their typical LIGA MX starting XI, and surprisingly starting with Cesar “Chino” Huerta on the bench.
Austin FC struck early in the 8th minute with a stunning goal from captain Alexander Ring. He unleashed an immaculate strike to beat the goalkeeper, sending shockwaves through Q2 Stadium and giving Austin the perfect start to their campaign.
Pumas responded with aggressive possession in Austin FC’s final third in search of an equalizer. Cleveland made a crucial save in the 17th minute to keep Austin ahead.
Tensions escalated when Osman Bukari received two yellow cards within six minutes, reducing Austin to 10 men.
Facing a disadvantaged Austin FC, Pumas brought on Huerta. However, it was Austin who capitalized next. In a remarkable effort, Gyasi Zardes found the back of the net, doubling Austin's lead.
Just before halftime, Pumas pulled one back via Huerta’s deflected shot and Ali Avila’s easy finish.
Sebastian Driussi was left unmarked at the far post in the 55th minute, converting a cross for a 3-1 lead.
Closing the night’s scoring, Guillermo Martinez rose above the defense to score a powerful header, making it 3-2.
A late VAR review awarded Pumas a penalty after Julio Cascante fouled Huerta. But it was Cleveland that cemented his place as an Austin FC hero by saving the penalty, preserving the victory.
After more than 100 minutes of grueling play, the final whistle blew, and Austin FC players collapsed to the ground in relief and celebration. Despite the referee’s decisions five total goals, Austin FC stood tallest to secure a crucial victory.
Austin now heads into its next match against Monterrey with renewed confidence and a chance to win the group. This opening game will be remembered not only for its drama and intensity but for the resilience and determination displayed by Austin FC being with 10 men for a majority of the match.
