It was a historic night for Club América, which delivered a commanding 3-1 victory over San Diego in the first-ever Leagues Cup match played at the iconic Estadio Banorte. Guillermo Almada's side wasted little time asserting its authority, putting the match out of reach before halftime with a dominant first-half display led by a sensational performance from Brian Rodríguez.
The Uruguayan was the undisputed star of the night, opening the scoring with a brilliant individual effort before adding two assists as Érick Sánchez and Isaías Violante extended América's lead to 3-0 before the break. San Diego managed to pull one back through Luca Bombino in the second half, but the outcome was never seriously in doubt as Las Águilas comfortably closed out the victory.
The occasion carried significance far beyond the result. Estadio Banorte, one of the most iconic venues in world football and the only stadium to host three FIFA World Cup opening matches and two FIFA World Cup Finals, welcomed Leagues Cup for the first time in tournament history. The landmark event represented another milestone in the competition's continued growth and expansion across North America, bringing one of the region's premier club tournaments to one of the sport's most historic stages.
With the victory, América became the second Liga MX club to win a Leagues Cup match on home soil after Toluca FC's dominant victory over the Seattle Sounders at Estadio Nemesio Diez the previous night. More importantly, Las Águilas took a major step toward securing one of Liga MX's four quarterfinal berths while making history in front of a packed home crowd.
