It looked destined for penalty kicks — until Eddie Segura showed up.
In one of the most anticipated matches of the night, LAFC and Toluca squared off at BMO Stadium in a heavyweight battle that ultimately needed an unlikely hero to separate the two sides.
In the 91st minute, Segura collected a loose ball after the Toluca defense failed to clear the danger. The LAFC defender showed impressive composure, settling the ball before firing a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Hugo González to send BMO Stadium into a frenzy and give the hosts a dramatic 1-0 victory.
The intensity was evident from the opening whistle. Less than a minute into the match, LAFC appeared to have earned a penalty, but the decision was quickly overturned following a VAR review.
That early sequence was a sign of things to come in an entertaining first half, with both teams attacking quickly in transition and forcing the goalkeepers into action.
Toluca threatened through Helinho, whose effort from the right side of the box was denied by Hugo Lloris and pushed behind for a corner. Just a minute later, LAFC responded on the counterattack, with González stopping Denis Bouanga to keep the match scoreless.
The hosts came even closer later in the half when Mathieu Choinière struck the left post, allowing Toluca to escape into halftime with the score still tied at 0-0.
The second half developed into a more tactical battle. Neither side was able to consistently find space in the final third as both defenses remained disciplined, closed passing lanes and blocked shots whenever danger emerged.
As the clock approached 90 minutes, a penalty shootout appeared inevitable. LAFC, however, continued to push for the winner — and its persistence was finally rewarded.
Segura's stoppage-time strike provided the breakthrough, turning a tightly contested heavyweight clash into a memorable night at BMO Stadium. LAFC's patience and determination ultimately made the difference, delivering a dramatic victory when penalties seemed only moments away.
