It was a thrilling, feisty and intense game that always felt like it would take a moment of brilliance to decide it. In the end, that moment came from Monterrey’s Orbelín Pineda, whose spectacular late goal proved to be the difference in an evenly contested battle between two talented sides.
It certainly wasn’t easy for Rayados, who were pressed from the opening whistle and struggled to create much early in the match. Chicago controlled possession and recovered the ball quickly, preventing Monterrey from settling into its rhythm.
Chicago’s early dominance didn’t translate to the scoreboard thanks in part to Monterrey goalkeeper Esteban Andrada, whose early save kept the match scoreless and allowed his team to settle in as the minutes passed.
Rayados gradually began to attack, and Jesús Corona provided Chicago with its first warning when his shot sailed over the crossbar. Monterrey continued to grow into the match and eventually earned a penalty after Chicago goalkeeper Chris Brady came off his line and caught former teammate Hugo Cuypers in the face while attempting to punch the ball away.
The penalty turned into a wasted opportunity when Lucas Ocampos struck the post, keeping the match scoreless — but not for long. Minutes later, Monterrey earned a set-piece opportunity, and a Gerardo Arteaga delivery was headed past Brady by Víctor Guzmán to give Rayados the lead just before halftime.
Chicago entered the second half knowing it needed an equalizer and began pushing its lines forward. After a couple of dangerous opportunities nearly ended in Monterrey’s net, the Fire finally broke through by taking advantage of an Ocampos turnover. Andrew Gutman found Philip Zinckernagel, who finished the play to make it 1-1 in the 59th minute.
The match remained level as Monterrey began spending more time in Chicago’s half, committing numbers forward and creating the more dangerous opportunities without finding the finishing touch.
That changed when Orbelín Pineda produced the moment of the night, unleashing a spectacular strike to give Monterrey a 2-1 lead late in the match.
The Fire pushed for an equalizer but couldn’t generate enough offense in the closing minutes. Robert Lewandowski and company were unable to find a way through, bringing Chicago’s run to an end in the Quarterfinals of the 2026 Leagues Cup while Monterrey secured its place in the Semifinals.
