MATCH RECAP: Toluca Gets Historic Victory Over the Reigning Leagues Cup Champions

By Erick De La Rosa

It was a masterclass from Toluca in the opening match of the 2026 Leagues Cup. The reigning Concacaf Champions Cup winners cruised to a commanding 3-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders, thanks to goals from Jesús Gallardo, Helinho, and Federico Viñas.

Antonio Mohamed's side controlled the match from the opening whistle, dictating possession, creating chance after chance, and rarely allowing Seattle to settle into the game. Were it not for an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Stefan Frei, the scoreline could have been even more lopsided at Estadio Nemesio Diez, where Toluca celebrated its first-ever Leagues Cup match on home soil in emphatic fashion.

The Diablos Rojos opened the scoring within the opening minutes through Gallardo before continuing to pile on the pressure throughout the first half. Helinho doubled the advantage after the break, and ViƱas put the finishing touches on a dominant display late in the match, capping a performance that showcased Toluca's attacking depth and relentless intensity.

With the victory, Toluca immediately establishes itself as one of the tournament's early favorites. Playing in front of its home supporters for the first time in Leagues Cup history, Mohamed's squad sent a clear message to the rest of the competition that it intends to contend for another international trophy this summer.

REACTIONS:

  • Toluca Head Coach Antonio Mohamed
    • "It's much tougher for them to play here, MLS teams really struggle on this side. Today we knew how to take advantage of that."
  • Seattle Head Coach Brian Schmetzer
    • "Toluca was the better team. The altitude and their intensity hurt us. We have to learn from this quickly."

PLAYERS OF THE MATCH:

  • Toluca
    • Alexis Vega provided the assist for JesĆŗs Gallardo's opener and was the key to unlocking Seattle's defense. The No. 9 constantly got to the end line, delivered crosses, tested Frei, and no defender could contain him for 90+ minutes.

  • Helinho scored just one minute after being subbed on.
  • Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei had 14 saves, a tremendous performance by the Sounders keeper to prevent a rout for the Diablos Rojos.
  • Seattle Sounders never adapted to the altitude in MĆ©xico and struggled all game with Toluca's tempo.
