(Yankee Stadium)
New York City FC and Club Querétaro were inseparable for 90 minutes, needing penalty kicks to decide their 2024 Leagues Cup opener on Sunday at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
NYCFC was victorious, 4-3, in the shootout after NYCFC goalkeeper Luis Barraza made the winning save on Ronaldo Cisneros, sending the home fans into jubilation.
“He's the hero tonight and he deserves it,” said New York City coach Nick Cushing. “One thing, I can't praise Luis enough, his character and his personality has been excellent. His training habits have been top level. That's why you get these moments tonight because he's kept himself ready and that's why I really believed in him tonight.”
KANSAS CITY 2, CHICAGO 1
(Children's Mercy Park)
In a match dominated by Sporting Kansas City everywhere but the scoreline, the home side had to come from behind to defeat the Chicago Fire, 2-1, in the opening match of group West 4 in the 2024 Leagues Cup.
Dressed in their Kansas City Wizards throwback uniforms, the MLS originals dominated possession for most of the match. Sporting coach Peter Vermes fielded an aggressive side that would take the ball into the attacking third with regularity.
