MATCHDAY 5: High stakes, goals galore dominate Wednesday's six matches

CHARLOTTE 0 (4), CRUZ AZUL 0 (2)

Charlotte FC and Cruz Azul needed penalties again to separate the two sides in another scoreless Leagues Cup encounter, as the MLS side came away victorious 4-2 on penalties on Wednesday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

David Bingham shined in his Charlotte FC debut, playing his first minutes after joining the club as a free agent in January, with four saves in regulation and two saves in the penalty shootout.

SANTOS LAGUNA 0, D.C. UNITED 3

The Black-and-Red booked their ticket to the Leagues Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday night with a dominant team performance resulting in a, 3-0, victory over Club Santos Laguna playing at the home venue of the Philadelphia Union.

DALLAS 0, JUÁREZ 2

With a solid defense and an overwhelming attack, FC Juarez qualified to the Knockout Stage of Leagues Cup by beating FC Dallas, 2-0, at Toyota Stadium — eliminating them from the tournament and securing a spot for St. Louis City SC to also move on to the next round out of West 3.

NASHVILLE 0, MAZATLÁN 2

After losing 1-0 to New England in their opening match of the 2024 Leagues Cup, FC Mazatlán coach Victor Manuel Vucetich made five changes to the starting XI for their group East 5 second round match against Nashville SC.

One of those changes, 19-year old Ramiro Árciga, scored a second half brace to propel Mazatlán to a 2-0 victory over Nashville at Geodis Park. The Mazatlán victory not only spoiled BJ Callaghan’s coaching debut for Nashville, it also earned Los Cañoneros a berth in the knockout phase of the tournament for the second year in a row.

TIGRES 2, PUEBLA 1

In a high-stakes LIGA MX clash, Tigres UANL edged out Club Puebla in a match that had significant implications for Inter Miami CF. The game was marked by a red card, spectacular saves from both teams, and Puebla ultimately being eliminated from Leagues Cup.

Tigres, one of Mexico's most successful teams in the past decade, welcomed back star goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán, who had been sidelined since March 9 due to injury and disciplinary action. They still fielded a formidable lineup understanding that they didn’t necessarily need to win this match featuring André-Pierre Gignac and Sebastián Córdova.

SAN JOSE 1, LA GALAXY 2

Marking their most valuable of four Cali Clasico wins this season, LA Galaxy secured their spot in the Leagues Cup knockout stages with a stunning 2-1 comeback victory over San Jose Earthquakes in their opening match of the tournament at PayPal Park on Wednesday night.
