MATCHDAY 5: Tension builds as tournament favorites Inter Miami and América among clubs battling for positioning

MATCH BY MATCH

ORLANDO CITY vs. ATLAS (Inter&Co Stadium, 6 p.m. ET)

Atlas are looking to bounce back from their defeat to Inter Miami, while Oscar Pareja’s side is hoping for a significant leap in the standings with a win over Atlas.

A leaky Atlas side will need to play a strong defensive game, but with a lot of internal and external issues surrounding the team, how will Pineda’s side respond to the mounting pressure?

For Orlando City, it’ll be all about freeing up the attacking third of the lineup and getting their key players into scoring positions.

INTER MIAMI CF vs. NECAXA (Chase Stadium, 7 p.m. ET)

Inter Miami CF, with their late-game dramatics and star-powered roster, are set to face another team in the spotlight: Club Necaxa. With perfection in reach, both sides enter this clash having won their opening matches in Leagues Cup play. While neither team can clinch qualification just yet, a win would place one foot firmly in the next round.

The stars will be out at Chase Stadium on August 2 at 7 p.m. local time, where Inter Miami looks to stay unbeaten. With a +1 goal differential, the Herons aim to extend their lead and rack up as many goals as possible in front of a home crowd.

AMÉRICA vs. MINNESOTA UNITED (Shell Energy Stadium, 9 p.m. ET)

Minnesota is coming an impressive 4-1 win over Querétaro on Wednesday which currently has them positioned among the top MLS teams in the tournament, but a tough challenge awaits as they'll take on an América determined to pick up a win and keep their hopes of advancing alive.

On the surface, Mexico’s winningest team taking on a trophyless club at a neutral venue would seem like a mismatch. But we know better. Look no further than their opening Leagues Cup matches, in which América required a 97th-minute equalizer from substitute Érick Sánchez to earn a point before Real Salt Lake outlasted Las Águilas in penalties.

The Loons appear ready for whatever challenge América presents.

PUMAS UNAM vs. ATLANTA UNITED (Inter&Co Stadium, 9 p.m. ET)

The pressure is on Atlanta United after another loss, and they must win if they want to stay alive in Leagues Cup as they will face a Pumas squad that are determined to add more points this Saturday at Inter&Co Stadium.

Ronny Deila and the rest of his team are really feeling it after another devastating loss in the year, when Club Necaxa dominated them in their first game of the tournament. These past couple of months have been very complicated for Atlanta, as their last win came on May 28.

Pumas should take advantage of this with their speedy players like Álvaro Angulo, Pedro Vite and Adalberto Carrasquilla who scored against Orlando City in their tournament opener. Even though Atlanta United has gotten eight goals in their last five games, the fact that Keylor Navas is now the Universitarios goalkeeper needs to be considered.

REAL SALT LAKE vs. ATLÉTICO SAN LUIS (America First Field, 9:30 p.m. ET)

After the first round of Phase One matches, Real Salt Lake is in a good position with two points in hand – more importantly, within close distance of rising into the top four MLS clubs in the race for the Quarterfinals.

The Claret-and-Cobalt overcame one of the toughest tests in Liga MX in defeating the 16-time champions, Club América, who came back to tie 2-2 before RSL goalkeeper Rafael Cabral shined in the penalty kick shoutout with three key stops.

Atlético de San Luis visits the Beehive State hoping to make it a memorable the occasion as they are still seeking their first victory in Leagues Cup play.

PORTLAND TIMBERS vs. QUERÉTARO (Providence Park, 11 p.m. ET)

The final scores in the respective first matches of each club in Leagues Cup 2025 speak for themselves. The Timbers dominated Atlético de San Luis even after having less shots, passes, corner kicks and possession percentage. At the end of the day, the stat that matters the most are the goals, and they got four while keeping a clean sheet.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Club Querétaro has not looked good on both sides of the pitch. They have only managed to score once in Liga MX, where they sit in last place, and lost their Leagues Cup opener 4-1 to Minnesota United.
