We’ve got all full slate of action tonight in Major League Soccer – less than two weeks from the start of Leagues Cup, we’re almost two-thirds done with the season, and teams are starting to cast an eye towards their playoff possibilities. Here’s our look at five key matches set to take place tonight:
New York Red Bulls vs. New England Revolution
After impressing in a battling draw that snapped Cincinnati’s perfect start to the season last weekend, the Revs will aim to burnish their playoff credentials by making the trip south to New Jersey. Their hosts’ form has improved since a change of managers earlier this season, but they still remain three points behind CF Montréal for the final playoff position.
Toronto FC vs. St. Louis CITY SC
Only Colorado have won fewer times this season than Toronto, but the ambitious Canadians still harbor hopes of a late season revival. Their task won’t be easy against St. Louis, though – the expansion side are top of the Western Conference and only Columbus have scored more goals than the visitors.
Houston Dynamo FC vs. Sporting Kansas City
It’s a battle of two improving teams led by Mexican superstars as Hector Herrera and the Dynamo welcome Alan Pulido’s Sporting Kansas City. Pulido was named the June player of the month in the league, helping lift his side into the playoff conversation. Houston, despite a frustrating loss to Seattle last weekend, will be eager to get back to winning ways.
Los Angeles Football Club vs. San Jose Earthquakes
Things have soured of late for the hosts, especially on the heels of a loss in El Tráfico on Wednesday. That said, they’re still level on points with second-place Seattle, and in Carlos Vela and Dénis Bouanga, have two of the league’s most dangerous attackers. The visitors have their own deadly duo, though, in the form of Cristián Espinoza and Jeremy Ebobisse – this should be a thoroughly entertaining match.
Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Seattle Sounders FC
Finally, it’s a Cascadia Cup clash in Vancouver as the Sounders head north looking to put pressure on top side St. Louis. A gritty win against ten-man Houston was impressive at the weekend, and they’ll need to be on top form to get past their rivals, who have recorded impressive results against Cincinnati and LAFC over the past month.
