Nashville SC missed out on winning Leagues Cup 2023 in dramatic and heart-breaking fashion via a penalty shootout following a tense 1-1 draw. Veteran Dax Mccarty started in midfield for the home side, and was vital in his team’s defensive display and the fightback against Lionel Messi’s sublime opening goal.
At 36 years of age, Mccarty is one of the elder statesmen of the game, and is in fact the same age as Inter Miami CF superstar Lionel Messi. Following a match full of emotions and ultimate disappointment, all was not yet lost for the former USMNT player.
On his social media, the midfielder posed with Lionel Messi’s iconic number 10 shirt from the final, stating “The night wasn’t a total loss”.
This was a follow-up to his more serious comments about the match earlier in the evening: “The result is obviously a swift kick to the groin, but I couldn’t be prouder of our team and our city. Our response after the 🐐 does 🐐 things was awesome. So much character in this group. It hurts but we will be better for it. Plenty of good nights and memories to come."
