New England Revolution are one of the inaugural members of MLS, having competed in the Eastern Conference since its first season. Since its founding 28 years ago, the club has two trophies to its name, winning the US Open Cup in 2007 and the Supporters’ Shield more recently in the 2021/22 season.
The Revs have majorly improved this season in MLS, sitting second in the Eastern Conference with 43 points. They are chasing Cincinnati at the top, who are eight points ahead.
New England Revolution will play in East 4 along with the New York Red Bulls and Atlético San Luis. They begin their 2023 Leagues Cup journey at Red Bull Arena against the New York Red Bulls on July 23, the third day of Leagues Cup action.
Carles Gil: Experience in attack
The Spanish attacking midfielder began his career at Valencia before signing for Aston Villa in 2015, where he gained valuable experience in the Premier League before returning to his native Spain and Deportivo in 2016.
He signed with New England Revolution in January 2019 as a Designated Player, eventually becoming the team’s captain and earning MLS Newcomer of the Year in his first season. Whilst his 2020 season was cut short due to injury, he signed a new contract and became one of the higher earners in the league. In 2021 he earned the MLS Comeback Player of the Year award, and eventually, the league’s Most Valuable Player.
Recently, Gil has been called up by Wayne Rooney for the 2023 MLS All-Star Game roster.
Jack Panayotau
The midfielder has made 10 appearances already in MLS at the age of 19, starting alongside fellow teenagers Esmir Bajraktarevic and Noel Buck. In the MLS NEXT Pro he showcased his attacking prowess, scoring two goals and creating one assist in five appearances.
However, he’ll be more known for being part of the U-19 New England side that won the MLS NEXT Cup, where he contributed six goals from attacking midfield during the tournament. Expect involvement and big things from New England’s young number 22.
